The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceasescu (2010)

Constructed entirely from official archival footage, The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceaușescu retraces the rise, reign, and collapse of Romania’s communist dictator through the images his regime produced of itself. State visits, party congresses, mass celebrations, factory tours, and carefully staged moments of private life accumulate without narration or explanatory commentary, allowing the machinery of Ceaușescu’s self-mythology to reveal itself from within.

Across three hours of propaganda, director Andrei Ujica transforms the dictator’s own image archive into a study of power, performance, and political spectacle. As ceremonies become increasingly grandiose and Ceaușescu appears ever more absorbed by the reality constructed around him, the film exposes the strange distance between an authoritarian regime’s idealized self-image and the history unfolding beyond the frame.
