Relaying Truth

Propaganda is not only found in state-controlled media. It can also operate through social media, algorithms, and the data used to train AI. Every dataset includes some things and excludes others, reflecting the choices, values, and perspectives of the people who create it.

During the ARTEZ Project Weeks, the students of the Design Art Technology department at ARTEZ Arnhem explore datasets as an artistic medium. Inspired by artist Alfredo Jaar’s ideas on the gap between reality and its representation, they collectively build and transform datasets. Each new version becomes a different representation of reality, revealing how information can be selected, framed, distorted, or steered.
