Inflammatory Essays (1979-82)

Jenny knows the power of language and with her interventions, she questions who controls the messages we see. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, she printed a large number of provocative essays and pasted them on the walls in subway stations and other public spaces in New York. The Inflammatory Essays are text of exactly 100 words and 20 lines, dealing with power, social control, violence, sex and politics in a propagandistic style.

Jenny Holzer is a conceptual artist from the USA who turns language into public spectacle. She has used poster, billboards, LED signs and projections to confront audiences with short, provocative statements in spaces normally occupied by advertising or public information.
